Are Your School’s Washrooms up to Standard?

As nearly 4 million of Australia’s students head back to their studies it is an important time for principles and bathroom managers to assess the quality of the facilities they are providing.

Why is it so important to review your facilities? Nearly half of students describe their schools washrooms as poor to fair. These negative perceptions about the quality of the washrooms cause them to have negative views of the schools leaders and school as a whole. Nearly a third of students admit that they try to avoid using the washrooms at school because they are dirty or smelly. Another important reason to review your washroom facilities is to reduce the risk of illness and disease.

All your washrooms should be equipped with the students in mind. One washroom accessory you may need is sanitary bins for all female cubicles – where age appropriate. It may also be a good idea to put up a sign stating not to flush cotton products down the toilet, which will reduce your plumbing problems. You can call us to request a sign for your washroom.

Soaps dispensers should be checked frequently to make sure they are still full and functional. Soap and water washing is the most effective way to remove germs. You should also consider investing in hand sanitisers as an extra level of protection. As well as using it after soap and water washing – many people who would otherwise leave the bathroom without washing their hands will use the sanitiser.

Toilet paper should be easily accessible and restocked regularly. Paper towels are the most hygienic way of drying the hands and if they are being used instead of hand dryers you need to keep an eye on supply levels and restock when necessary. Make sure that your urinals are stocked with sanitising tablets or products such as our eco-mats. These work great in both flushing and waterless urinals and ensures there is no lingering smell in the bathroom.

Depending on the age and needs of the school you may also need to invest in a nappy bin and a change table. You should also consider installing air fresheners in the washrooms. This is often overlooked in schools, however bad odours is one of the leading causes for complaint in washrooms.
