Do First Aid Kit Bandages Need to Be Sterile or Expire?

Do All First Aid Kit Bandages Need to Be Sterile?

No. Not every bandage or dressing in an Australian workplace first aid kit is required to be sterile, and not every item must carry an expiry date. Whether an item should be sterile depends on its intended purpose, particularly whether it will come into direct contact with an open wound.

Sterile products should remain sealed, undamaged and within any expiry date provided by the manufacturer. Non-sterile products may remain suitable for use without an expiry date, provided they are clean, undamaged, have been stored correctly and remain fit for purpose.

What Does the Australian Model Code of Practice Say?

The Model Code of Practice: First Aid in the Workplace provides guidance on workplace first aid equipment, facilities, procedures and training. It recommends that the contents of a workplace first aid kit be determined through a risk assessment that considers the work being performed, workplace hazards, location and the number of people who may require first aid.

The example first aid kit contents in the Model Code include sterile gauze pieces. It also lists items such as conforming cotton bandages, crepe bandages, triangular bandages, adhesive tape and safety pins without stating that these items must be sterile. This reflects the different purposes these products serve.

The Model Code does not impose a blanket requirement that every bandage or dressing must be sterile. Businesses should still check the requirements applying in their state or territory because the legal effect of the Model Code can differ between jurisdictions.

What First Aid Kit Items Should Be Sterile?

Items intended to be placed directly onto an open wound are generally supplied sterile. Sterility helps reduce the risk of introducing contaminants to damaged skin.

Common sterile first aid supplies can include wound dressings, gauze swabs, eye pads, saline pods, combine dressings and non-adherent wound pads. The exact classification may vary between products and manufacturers, so the packaging should always be checked before use.

Sterile products are normally individually sealed and carry an expiry date. Once that date has passed, the manufacturer may no longer guarantee the sterility or performance of the product. An expired sterile product should therefore be replaced even when its packaging appears intact.

Which First Aid Kit Items May Be Non-Sterile?

Many bandages are designed to secure a sterile dressing, provide compression, support an injured joint or immobilise part of the body. Because these products are not normally placed directly into an open wound, they may not need to be sterile.

Common examples include crepe bandages, elastic or compression bandages, triangular bandages, adhesive tape and safety pins. Conforming bandages may be supplied as either sterile or non-sterile products, so their packaging and instructions should be checked carefully.

A non-sterile bandage should not be used as a substitute for a sterile wound dressing when direct wound contact is required.

Why Do Some First Aid Bandages Have No Expiry Date?

An expiry date indicates how long a manufacturer guarantees particular characteristics of a product, such as sterility, adhesive performance or product effectiveness. A non-sterile bandage may not rely on a sterility guarantee to perform its intended function, so some manufacturers provide a manufacturing date without assigning an expiry date.

The absence of an expiry date does not automatically make a bandage non-compliant or unsuitable. It also does not mean that the product will remain usable indefinitely. The manufacturer’s instructions, storage conditions and physical condition of the item must still be considered.

For more information about product dating, read Sanokil’s guide to the difference between a manufacture date and an expiry date.

When Should a Non-Sterile Bandage Be Replaced?

A non-sterile bandage should be replaced if it is torn, wet, contaminated, discoloured or otherwise deteriorated. It should also be removed from the kit if it has become permanently stretched, no longer provides adequate support or has packaging that is damaged or cannot be properly identified.

Adhesive tape should be replaced if it has dried out or no longer adheres properly. Any product affected by heat, moisture, chemicals, pests or unsuitable storage conditions should also be assessed and replaced where necessary.

If there is uncertainty about an item’s condition, intended use or storage history, replacing it is the safest option.

How Often Should Workplace First Aid Kits Be Checked?

Safe Work Australia recommends checking workplace first aid kits after use and replacing used supplies as soon as practicable. If a kit has not been used, it should still be checked regularly and at least once every 12 months.

During each inspection, the person responsible should confirm that the kit contains the required items, products are in working order, supplies have not deteriorated, dated products remain within their expiry dates and sterile packaging is sealed and has not been tampered with.

Busy workplaces or environments with higher injury risks may require more frequent inspections. First aid arrangements should also be reviewed when workplace hazards, staffing levels, work activities or locations change.

Does No Expiry Date Mean a Bandage Is Non-Compliant?

No. A missing expiry date does not, by itself, mean that a first aid bandage is non-compliant. If the manufacturer has not assigned an expiry date, the item may remain suitable while it is clean, undamaged, correctly stored and capable of performing its intended function.

Workplace first aid compliance depends on more than the dates printed on individual products. The complete kit must be appropriate for the workplace risks, readily accessible, properly maintained and stocked with usable supplies.
