Procedure to follow when servicing your sanitary units

Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You need to make sure that you are wearing proper protective gear when servicing the bins. Ensure you are wearing gloves. Even though the local and state government may class the waste as non-clinical the waste is definitely a bio-hazard. You need to be careful of any sharp items that may have been disposed of in the unit such as needles and avoid contact with any bodily fluids. If you believe you have been exposed to a hazard, such as being pricked with a needle, you need to go to the emergency department as soon as possible.

Open the Lid and Pull Out the Liner

Remove the unit if it is located in a cubicle to give yourself more space to complete the process. Most sanitary units like this one are opened by removing the lid. Carefully remove the bin liner making sure not to expose yourself to any sharp objects that may have been placed inside.

Dispose of the Liner Bag

Tie a knot in the top of the bag or seal with another method. Do not let the bag come into contact with your body and do not attempt to get the air out of the bag through compression. The possibility of items piercing the bag while doing so would put you at risk. Dispose of the liner in your waste trolley or lined bin.

Clean the Unit

Sanitize the unit by wiping it down with a disinfectant. You should completely wipe down the unit while giving particular attention to the parts that are most frequently touched. These include the lid and its handle.

Replace the Liner

Fit a fresh liner into the unit making sure that it is expanded within as much as possible. Add sanitizing granules to the unit’s liner to ensure it remains fresh, hygienic and odour free.

Finish Up

Replace the lid on top of the unit and give it a final wipe over with your sanitizing solution. Put the unit back into its position in the washroom.

Can you service your own sanitary bins?

In most states, it is perfectly fine to service your own sanitary bins. This is because sanitary waste is usually certified as a normal landfill as opposed to clinical or bio-hazardous waste. It is best to check the regulations for your state and local government beforehand which can be done by contacting them or through a quick google search.
