This Friday the 16th of October is Restart a Heart Day. It is a time for Australians to join together and raise awareness about cardiac arrest, learn about providing first aid to victims and motivate everyone to reduce the number of deaths each year.
Every year 34,000 people in Australia and New Zealand experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. Every minute that passes before the victim receives treatment their chance of survival drops 10% – however, most people do not know what to do to provide the life-saving treatment. After 10 minutes, the damage caused without this treatment is usually irreversible.
Cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. When someone enters cardiac arrest it is often considered a “Sudden death”. They will collapse, stop breathing efficiently and require CPR immediately. This can often happen without warning. There are a number of reasons that may cause the heart to stop including a heart attack. But they can also be caused by traumas, injuries, drugs and a number of health conditions.
Cardiac arrests do not discriminate either. From young children, to fit athletes on the sports field. A hard-working middle-aged woman or a retiree enjoying their final years. It can strike any age and level of fitness.
What can your business do? Spread the word. Train members of staff to be able to provide the right assistance when someone goes into cardiac arrest. Invest in a defibrillator for your site and make sure everybody knows where it is located.
Take a look at our range of defibrillators so that your site is better prepared to save a life. Remember, every minute before treatment is administered the chance of survival drops by %10. Our defibrillators are easy to use, small and compact and provide audio assistance to guide the user through CPR and using the device. It can even let you know whether you need to change the speed or strength of your compression!
